The Northern Lights return to Alta in September

Autumn begins early in Alta. In September, the evenings are getting darker, and for eager Northern Lights hunters, the season has already begun.

While the Northern Lights are often associated with winter, the season starts earlier in Alta. In autumn, nature puts on its colours while the Northern Lights return to the evening sky.

Look for the first Northern Lights of the season

September marks the beginning of the Northern Lights season in Alta. From September to the end of March, there are opportunities to experience the Aurora Borealis, if the conditions are right. But some years, we can actually see them at the end of August already!

Autumn also brings a different Arctic landscape. The days gradually become shorter, the colours of nature change, and the darkness returns. This makes September and the autumn months a time when you can combine outdoor experiences during the day with Northern Lights hunting after dark.

Go hunting for the Northern Lights

You don’t have to wait for winter to join a Northern Lights tour in Alta.

Local guides know the area well and follow the weather and Northern Lights conditions to find places with good opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis. Depending on the conditions, tours may head towards the coast or up onto the Finnmark plateau.

Remember to dress according to the weather and season, and keep in mind that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed.
