Once upon a time, almost 600 million years ago, some good friends embarked on a long, long journey.
The globe was forming and the continents gathered. Large floods carried river sand to the sea and over countless years the layers thickened. The foundation of the world’s hardest shale rock. A stone, which turned into an entire city – Alta.
This is where our adventure starts. Over thousands of years, a culture with strong ties to nature developed. The story is in many ways written in stone and carved into the rocks of Altafjord for eternity.
In winter, a green figure often appeared in the sky. She danced so beautifully, and was named Aurora Borealis – so the city became the city of northern lights. If you waved at her – she took you with her – but no one knows where.
The good friends eventually got good helpers in the harsh Arctic climate.
Huskies howling like the wolf, the king of the forest, reindeer wandering in flocks, the king of the Barents Sea, the mighty song of humpback whales and the great salmon – who were eager to return home – to Alta Canyon – northern Europe’s biggest.
One day they decided to cross the endless plateau – Sennalandet. At an intersection, they met the white reindeer Gabba. Where are we now? They asked.
Skaidi, he answered – it is Sami and means «where the 2 rivers meet». The question is now; where does the river continue to flow?
