Alta is located in Finnmark county, the northernmost part of Norway. Alta is the largest and most populous city in Finnmark. There are several ways to travel to Alta.
Travel to Alta by plane
Airport: Alta Airport is located 5 kilometers from the city center. There are departures Sunday-Friday to and from Oslo Airport Gardermoen and Tromsø Airport. There are also further connections to and from smaller towns in Finnmark, such as Hammerfest, Honningsvåg, Vadsø and Kirkenes
Flight time: Oslo-Alta takes 2 hours, Tromsø-Alta takes 30 minutes and Kirkenes-Alta takes 50 minutes.
Direct route from Frankfurt: It was recently announced that a new direct route from Frankfurt to Alta will be opened in December 2024. The flights can be booked on discover-airlines.com, in travel agencies and via all booking channels and websites of the Lufthansa Group.
To and from the airport: The airport bus is operated by Snelandia. From Alta there are bus connections to many places in Finnmark. The travel time to the city center is approx. 10 minutes. Alta Taxi has a stop outside the arrival hall and can also be booked by phone on +47 78 43 53 53.
Arrival by boat or cruise ship
Alta Harbor is 5 kilometers from the city center and is located close to the airport. There are departures Sunday-Friday to Hammerfest with Vargsundekspressen via Storekorsnes. The boat takes about 1.5 hours to Hammerfest.
Cruiseships arrive at Alta Harbour. To reach city center or Alta Museum it is easy to take bus 42 from Alta airport (600 meters) or Betongveien (600 meters).
Travel to Alta by car
The European roads E6 and E45 meet in Alta. The E6 takes you south to Trondheim and Oslo, and northeast to Kirkenes. The E45 takes you to Kautokeino and further into Finland and Sweden.

Travel to Alta by bus
The bus from Tromsø goes through North Troms via the E6 and you can also take a bus from smaller cities in Finnmark such as Karasjok, Kautokeino and Honningsvåg. Here you can find the time tables.

- For a bus connection to Kirkenes, the easiest option is to take the bus to Olderfjord and on from there with a corresponding bus to Kirkenes.
