Reindeer Island Hammerfest is a family-run Sámi tourism company rooted in generations of reindeer herding on the islands around Hammerfest.
Founder Mihkkal Aslat Ivvar Sara grew up following the herd across mountains and
coastal pastures, learning the rhythms of Arctic life from his father and grandparents.
Today, he combines traditional knowledge with small-scale tourism to preserve and
share the living culture of Sámi reindeer herding.
Reindeer Island Hammerfest experiences are not staged performances. They are invitations into real everyday life — shaped by the seasons, the animals and the land.
Depending on the season, guests may:
– Meet and feed reindeer
– Learn about seasonal migration and herd life
– Sit around the fire in a traditional lavvu
– Hear personal stories about Sámi history and identity
– Experience Arctic landscapes in silence and slow rhythm
Reindeer Island Hammerfest focus on small groups and meaningful encounters. Many of our guests come seeking something deeper than a quick visit — a genuine connection to nature, culture and contemporary Sámi life.
For private groups and tour operators, transportation from Alta can be arranged upon request.
