Alta museum


Alta has one of the richest concentrations of rock art in Northern Europe made by hunters and gatherers. In Hjemmeluft, by Alta Museum, is one of the areas which is made available to the public. There are over 3000 rock carvings in this area, the oldest ones over 7000 years old. The rock art park is available in the snow-free period. Alta Museum is open all year and offers interesting exhibits on rock art and Alta's recent history, as well as temporary exhibitions of northern light, salmon fishing in the Alta River and art exhibitions. The museum café has an incredible view of the Alta Fjord. The museum shop has gifts and souvenirs from northern Norway. The shop offers items such as Sami knives from Strømeng in Karasjok, jewelry from Juhls and Tana Silver, local food and glass products from Artic Glass Studio. Guided tours for groups must be pre booked. Audio guides are available in Norwegian, English, German and French.
