Witness one of the most fragile and powerful moments in Sámi life — the arrival of new reindeer calves in Arctic spring. Travel by snowmobile sled into the mountains and experience calving season alongside a Sámi reindeer-herding family.
Spring Reindeer Calving – Sámi Life at Its Beginning is a rare opportunity to be present during one of the most important and sensitive periods in Sámi reindeer herding culture.
Every spring, the reindeer return to traditional mountain areas to give birth. They have followed these routes for generations. During this time, herders live closely with the herd, ensuring safety, monitoring behavior and adapting to rapidly changing weather conditions.
For a short and limited window in May, a small number of guests are invited to join — quietly and respectfully.
This is not a staged experience. There are no guarantees and no performances. Nature and the herd decide what the day brings.
Guests travel by snowmobile sled into the calving area and spend time near the herd, learning how Sámi families protect the animals during this fragile season. You may assist with feeding when appropriate, observe herd behavior and gain insight into how herders read snow conditions, tracks and weather signs.
If the timing is right, you may witness a newborn calf take its first steps. If not, you are still present during one of the most meaningful periods in Arctic reindeer life.
The value lies not in what is promised — but in what is real.
