Did you know that Sautso comes from the Sámi word Čávžu, which means canyon? This is a unique experience hosted by a Sámi family from Máze. Máze is a small Sámi village located by the renowned Máze-Alta River, 70 km south of Alta. You’ll have the opportunity to experience the breathtaking nature from Máze to Čávžu, Sautso Canyon, aboard the world’s longest traditional riverboat.

The area around Čávžu is the reindeers grazing land. The construction of the dam in the region sparked protests and led to Norway’s largest police action, which resulted in significant changes, including a complete reform of Norwegian Sámi politics, a dedicated constitutional article on Sámi language, culture, and society, and the establishment of the Sámi Parliament. The dam and its history remain deeply significant to the local community, especially reindeer herders.

At Čávžu, you’ll be invited into a traditional lavvu (Sámi tent) and served Sámi traditional food featuring reindeer meat.

This is a private tour, just for you. While enjoying your meal around the fire, we’ll share more about the Sámi people, reindeer herding, our way of life, and the culture and history tied to Čávžu.

You can also book a bus tour to the dam before and after the riverboat season.
