Up until the 1960s, ráidu (reindeer sledding) was a common sight in Máze and across the tundra, as modern roads were only built around that time, and snowmobiles didn’t yet exist. Today, we still tame reindeer using traditional methods—not only to preserve traditional knowledge and keep our heritage alive, but also because we use our tamed reindeer during the spring migration with the herd.

These moments are magical and truly worth experiencing.

By the way, did you know that Máze was an inspiration for the Disney movie Frozen 2?

After we return to the camp, we’ll serve a two-course Sámi festival meal featuring reindeer meat and other local ingredients in our lavvu (Sámi tent). The meal consists of the traditional Sámi dish biđos, served with homemade bread. Dessert includes “mountain gold,” also known as cloudberries, served with cream, coffee, and cake.

While you enjoy the meal around the fire, we’ll share stories about sami traditions and customs, such as proposal rides, and perhaps even perform a joik (traditional Sámi song).

The meal can be replaced with Sámi snacks if preferred.
