Alta has recently been awarded the Sustainable Destination Label, developed by Innovation Norway. This recognition marks an important step in the right direction for the region as a responsible and future-oriented destination, with sustainability being a key part of its strategy.
A New Destination Strategy for the Future
The awarding of the Sustainable Destination Label is part of Alta’s long-term process to develop a more sustainable and quality-oriented destination. As part of the process to achieve this recognition, Alta has developed a new destination strategy that clearly outlines the path for future growth. The goal is to create the right kind of growth in the tourism industry, one that contributes both to the preservation of natural and cultural resources while also generating value for the local community.
“We are very proud that Alta can now carry the title of Sustainable Destination. It is confirmation that we are on the right path in our work to develop Alta into a sustainable and attractive destination for both guests and residents. Especially gratifying is the fact that this work marks, in many ways, the beginning of closer collaboration between the municipality, the tourism industry, and other community actors. This label is a clear signal of our shared commitment to a more sustainable future,” says Silje Ingebrigtsen, Head of Community Development in Alta Municipality.
Collaboration is Key
For the tourism industry in Alta, collaboration is central, and it is noticed by both the locals and visitors. A lot of work has gone into achieving the Sustainable Destination label, but the strong collaboration between the industry, Alta Municipality, and other stakeholders, along with the great commitment from the local community, has helped strengthen the process, says project leader Hilde Bjørkli.
“We achieved an impressive 97% in goal achievement for the delivery, and there is only one other destination in Norway among first-time certified destinations that has reached this level before. This means that Alta is already on the right track! We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this long and challenging process: Alta Municipality, our partners from the local tourism industry, and the project’s broad-based steering group. Their efforts and dedication have been crucial to our success. A big thank you also to our process facilitator Anne Dorte Carlson from Occasio Consult AS, and project leader Hilde Bjørkli and her colleague Dag Norum from Orinor for their steady project leadership with great commitment,” says Katja Pettersen, CEO of Visit Alta.
Alta – A Great Place to Live and Visit
The awarding of the Sustainable Destination Label is both a commitment and a strategy for Alta. While the goal of becoming certified has been achieved, the real work starts now. Both the tourism industry and Alta Municipality have gained a valuable tool that will help us ensure that Alta remains a great place to live and visit – now and in the future.
